A Stroll Through London’s Innovations.
This is around a three mile gentle and unhurried walk taking in the O2 Dome, a cable car ride, some old cranes and a stunning view of the Thames Barrier.
Update: 4th September: please note revised starting time:
Starting at 10:30 AM on Saturday 14th September 2024.
Meet outside the North Greenwich tube station on Peninsula Square. This station is on the Jubilee line.
There are cafes to buy a lunch or bring a packed lunch.
The Walk
We will walk to the O2 exploring the shops at this innovative building that housed the Millennium Experience in 2000. It now is an Arena where major performances take place. It also hosts Up – a bit of a daredevil walk over the dome structure. We will not include this in our walk so make your own arrangements if you are interested ( https://www.theo2.co.uk/up-at-the-o2/climb ).
We can enjoy a coffee or refreshments from one of O2’s trendy cafés before heading to the London cable car station. Members will need to buy their ride across the Thames which will cost £6.00 for an adult fare and is where we will soar across the Thames, getting some sweeping views of the river and the city. The ride lasts about 10 minutes.
On the north side of the Royal Victoria Dock, where we alight the cable car, the walk along Dockside Walk takes us past towering old cranes that tell the tale of the area’s maritime past.
The Excel Centre, another venue for major performance events, is close by and we may take a sneak view of this. From here we will be crossing the Royal Victoria Dock via footbridge that offers more stunning views. Before heading to the Thames Barrier Park with its landscaped gardens, we will take a slight detour to the west of the park allowing members to get some snacks from cafes or food outlets.
We hope to have lunch together in the park with some stunning views of the Thames Barrier, a feat of engineering keeping London free of possible floods.
From here you can make a return journey home taking the DLR (London’s driverless trains that run above street level). Immediately north of the park is the DLR’s Pontoon Dock station.
If you can include a stop at Canary Wharf station then there is an opportunity to get some images of several of these trains together.
We are really grateful to Bob Taylor for the suggestion and details of this walk. He has also put together some 2D images of what you might expect to see on his Flicker at:
