Cardiff convention 2017 Projection schedule
The Stereoscopic Society Convention and AGM 2017 will be held at the Angel Hotel, in the city centre of Cardiff from Friday 5th to 8th May 2017.
The Angel Hotel is a beautiful Victorian landmark in the very heart of the city, located directly over the road from Cardiff Castle. The Hotel is perfectly placed for discovering on foot the Welsh capital and the city centre shops. Cardiff Central railway station is just 7 minutes walk. Cardiff Bay widely regarded as one of the most successful regeneration projects in the United Kingdom is a 20 minute walk or short bus, taxi or even boat ride. The bay has many tourist attractions including The Senedd, home of the National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff Marina and International White Water Centre, the Doctor Who Experience and many more.
The hotel is significant in the history of Cardiff and has many period features including a large elegant double sweeping staircase in the lobby, a great group photo opportunity. Cardiff Castle is straight over the road giving picturesque views from the bar and dining room and some of the 102 bedrooms. All bedrooms are non-smoking and with en-suite facilities, television, telephone, Free WiFi, tea and coffee making equipment. All the bedrooms are an extremely nice standard and decoration, and the staff are very helpful. The hotel is part of the same hotel group we used last year and is actually the same hotel the society used 30 years ago for the convention in 1987.
Projection will take place in the Dragon Suite which has a very high ceiling to allow comfortable clear views of our 3D screen. It is a similar large size room to last year, allowing our usual 100+ seat theatre setting and plenty of surrounding space for displays and workshop and sales tables.
The price is the same as last year, £67.00 Dinner, Bed and Breakfast per person per night during the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights of the convention. (Note there is a £10 per day parking charge, discounted from normal rate.)
Dinner is included for those staying in the hotel and will be served each evening at 6pm in the restaurant as a single sitting, with each evenings 3D projection then taking place at 8pm in the Dragon Suite until approximately 10pm.
The hotel has a block of bedrooms reserved for us, any spare rooms will be released after the 9th March 2017, so please book in good time to avoid disappointment, price and availability from then on is not guaranteed.
The Sunday outing on May 7th will be to Caerphilly Castle and to St Fagans National History Museum.
Dominating an impressive 30 acre site, Caerphilly Castle is Wales’ largest and Britain’s second largest castle behind Windsor and recently had a starring role in the BBC TV series Merlin. The castle is located straight over the road from Caerphilly town which we will have time to explore and find the statue of Tommy Cooper who was born here, or seek out refreshment.
We will then spend the afternoon at St Fagans, Wales’s most popular heritage attraction. The museum stands in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle and gardens where over forty original buildings from different historical periods have been re-erected in the 100-acre parkland, among them houses, a farm, a school, a chapel, a splendid Workmen’s Institute and Gwalia Tea Rooms a traditional 1930’s tea room serving light lunches and afternoon teas.
Traditional crafts and activities bring St Fagans alive, in workshops where craftsmen still demonstrate their traditional skills. Native breeds of livestock can be seen in the fields and farmyards, and demonstrations of farming tasks take place daily.
St Fagans explores all aspects of how people in Wales have lived and worked. The Welsh language can be heard in daily use amongst craftsmen and interpreters.
