Southampton Convention

2019 Convention was in Southampton

The Stereoscopic Society Convention and AGM 2019 was held in Southampton at the Dolphin Mercure Hotel 34-35 High Street, Southampton, SO14 2HN, from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May 2019. The hotel is a 500 year old coaching inn in the city centre, which has recently completed a £4 million refurbishment programme, we were made very welcome. The hotel is within walking distance of the shopping centre.

The format of the Convention was very familiar to regulars; 3D projection of members shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. On Saturday morning the highlight were the Annual General Meeting, including election of the Committee, followed by members 3D displays. Saturday afternoon was free.

On Sunday we went to Bucklers Hard, a 18th century shipbuilding village, followed by a visit to the Beaulieu Abbey (dating from 1204), gardens and Motor Museum.

Members also took the opportunity to visit many of several interesting museums in Southampton, including the Solent Sky Museum, SeaCity Museum, Tudor House and Garden, and Southampton City Museums. Southampton is situated on the edge of the New Forest National Park, planted by William the Conqueror in 1079, and contains a vast expanse of common land, with many wild deer and New Forest ponies. Travelling in an easterly direction is Portsmouth Dockyard. Nearby, in Gosport, there is the Submarine Museum and another museum called Explosion! Even further eastwards, there is the cathedral city of Chichester, its famous theatre and gateway to the south Downs National Park. Going north you could reach Winchester, with its famous cathedral, King Alfred’s capital of Wessex, and birthplace of many famous people.
